Hemant Kumar, born as Hemanta Mukhopadhyay, was a renowned Indian music composer, singer, and film producer. He was born on June 16, 1920, in Varanasi, India. Hemant Kumar was known for his soulful and melodious voice, which captured the essence of Indian classical music and made him one of the most popular playback singers of his time. He sang in Bengali and Hind as well as other Languages_Marathi Gujarati Odia Assamese Tamil Punjabi Bhojpuri Konkani Sanskrit and  Urdu. He was an artist of Bengali and Hindi film music, Rabindra Sangeet and many other genres. He was the recipient of two National Awards for Best Male Playback Singe and was popularly known as the “voice of God”.

Hemant Kumar began his music career in Kolkata, where he worked as a singer for All India Radio. He started composing music for films in 1947, and his breakthrough came with the film “Anand Math” in 1952. Hemant Kumar was known for his unique style of music, which was a blend of Indian classical music and Western music. He was one of the pioneers of the Indian music industry who introduced a new style of music that was different from the traditional music that was popular at the time.

Hemanta’s first film song was in the Bengali film Rajkumarer Nirbbasan released in 1940 which was scored by S.D Burman .

This was followed by Nimai Sanyas in 1941, in which music was scored by Hariprasanna Das. Hemanta’s first compositions for himself were the Bengali non-film songs “Katha Kayonako Shudhu Shono” and “Amar Biraha Akashe Priya” in 1943. The lyrics were by Amiya Bagchi.

His first Hindi film songs were in Meenakshi in 1942. followed by Irada in 1944, with music composed by Amar Nath.

Hemant Kumar’s music was not only popular in India but also in other countries. He collaborated with some of the most renowned music composers of his time, such as Salil Chowdhury, Ravi Shankar, and SD Burman. Some of his most popular songs include “Tum Pukar Lo” from the film “Khamoshi,” “Na Tum Hamein Jano” from “Baat Ek Raat Ki,” and “Yeh Raat Yeh Chandni” from “Jaal.”
